#4- My Slice of Life

Posted on February 6th, 2009 in Uncategorized by heather04

It was about three in the morning, I was staying the night at my grandmas house because my mom was in the hospital waiting to have my baby sister. The Phone rang at about three A.M. it woke us all up and since it was the middle of the night we didn’t know what was going on. It was my daddy calling us to have us come down to the hospital because the doctor was inducing my mom. I was full of excitement! I couldn’t believe I was about to be a big sister. After eight years of being an only child and begging and pleading for a little sibling. Well now my wish was about to come true. We got to the hospital and we spent about four hours waiting to know what was going on.

At about 7:30 A.M. the nurse came out and said, ” Heather would you like to come and meet your brand new baby sister?” I was so happy. She was here! I had someone to play with now! I went in and saw my mom laying in the bed and my dad next to her. In the bed with my mom was my baby sister. Rebecca Ella-June Mikel.  She was seven pounds and thirteen ounces, she had chunky baby cheeks and the brightest red hair I  had ever seen.  My daddy picked her  up and put her in my arms.  She was finally here, after eight years of begging and pleading she was finally here.  I couldn’t have been happier. Now eight years later I’m sixteen and she will be eight in just a few weeks. I’m still extremely proud that she is my little sister and I got to be there at the hospital the day she was born.

It was a cold, foggy, December evening. We were all hurrying around the house, impaciently awaiting my parents arrival. All while getting ready for my Christmas concert. The fire had died down, we were all in a hurry. The phone rings. My papa answers it,”hello”, he had been having a lot of health problems in the last couple of months. It was his doctor calling, telling him that the lesions they had found on his liver were cancerous. My Grandma, frantically running around the house trying to find the other phone. When she finally finds the phone, she hears just enough to kow that he has ben given 6 months to a year left to live.

All I know is that my grandpa is very sick and there really isn’t a lot they can do for him. Months go by, he should have passed away by now. He gets sicker and sicker as the days go by. But he fights for his family. Its christmas time once again and he can’t eat. He sits by the fire and reads his book. Ready to be done. A few more months go by and he is now at Sacred Heart Medical Center on te cancer floor.

The staff decides that it is best to move him to a nursing home. As we make the preperations, our family members from California come up to say their good-byes. We are now transporting him to the nursing him home.

With tears in our eyes and sadness in our hearts. We all know the time is coming. Three days go by at the nursing home, we all sit by his side. Its August 8th,2005 and my mom is playing a cd by the Stock Brothers. Its the end of the very last song. As the song ends, my papa takes his very last breath.
